Set to debut in Summer 2025, Vicolo promises to bring a blend of authentic Italian flavors and contemporary dining to the heart of the city. Here’s everything you need to know about this highly anticipated new spot.

A Taste of Italy in Downtown Aurora

Located at 7 S. Broadway, Vicolo will offer an all-day dining experience, transitioning seamlessly from a casual café atmosphere during the day to an upscale restaurant in the evening.

The dynamic duo behind Vicolo are Chris and Megan Curren a husband and wife team that have a passion for creating meaningful, community-driven dining experiences. They first gained recognition with their acclaimed restaurant, The Graceful Ordinary in St. Charles Illinois.

Designed by the renowned Dunne Kozlowski team, the venue combines modern aesthetics with warm, inviting elements, creating the perfect space for everything from a leisurely brunch to a romantic dinner.

The Menu: A Journey Through Italy

The menu at Vicolo will showcase the best of Italy's culinary traditions, with dishes crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Whether you’re craving a classic bowl of pasta, a creative pizza, or something unique, there will be something for everyone.

Expect an array of carefully curated dishes, including house-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and specialty seafood. The restaurant is committed to delivering a high-quality dining experience, with an emphasis on flavors that are as authentic as they are innovative. To pair with your meal, Vicolo will offer an impressive wine list, featuring Italian wines that complement their delicious dishes.

Vicolo's All-Day Dining Concept

One of the standout features of Vicolo is its flexible dining concept. During the day, the café will offer a relaxed setting, ideal for grabbing a cup of coffee or enjoying a light breakfast or lunch. As evening approaches, the atmosphere will shift, with dimmed lighting and a more refined menu perfect for a date night or special occasion. The transition between casual café and upscale dining gives patrons the option to enjoy the space in whichever way best suits their mood.

A Focus on Community and Family

Vicolo isn’t just about food, t’s about creating a place where the community can gather. The name “Vicolo” means "alley" in Italian, symbolizing the restaurant’s goal of bringing people together in a warm, intimate environment. Whether you’re coming in for a quick bite or celebrating a milestone, Vicolo aims to offer a space that feels like home.

Looking Ahead: The Grand Opening

Though Vicolo’s official opening date is still a few months away, excitement is already building in the community. The restaurant is poised to be a perfect addition to Aurora’s thriving food scene, drawing locals and visitors alike with its promise of exceptional cuisine and inviting atmosphere.

Where Math Grows: A New Way to Learn at the Marie Wilkinson Community Garden

Where Math Grows: A New Way to Learn at the Marie Wilkinson Community Garden

There’s something new sprouting at the Marie Wilkinson Community Garden and it’s not just tomatoes and basil.Tucked between rows of sunflowers and raised garden beds is a space where kids aren’t just digging in the dirt, they’re discovering math through play.Welcome to the Playful Learning Landscape, a vibrant outdoor exhibit designed to bring numbers, shapes, and patterns to life in the most joyful way possible.Installed in summer 2025, the Playful Learning Landscape is a series of five interactive math stations nestled into the garden across from the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry. Created in collaboration with the Chicago Children’s Museum, SPARK Early Childhood Collaboration, and Metropolitan Family Services, this space is all about turning everyday moments into learning opportunities.Kids can hop through geometric grids, count garden treasures like stones and leaves, and explore puzzles that encourage spatial thinking, sorting, and problem-solving.The best part? It’s free, open to the public, and made for all ages. This exhibit isn’t just a drop-in playground. It’s the result of a community-driven design process, where local parents, educators, and kids helped shape what they wanted to see.Aurora was selected as one of just three Illinois communities to launch a Playful Learning site alongside Little Village and North Lawndale in Chicago. It’s a major step toward ensuring equitable access to early learning, especially in spaces that families already visit.“This is more than a math station,” said one volunteer from SPARK. “It’s about meeting kids where they are and empowering caregivers to teach and connect, no classroom required.”Why It MattersEarly math skills like sorting, comparing, counting, and spatial reasoning are critical building blocks for future success. But too often, these skills are tied to formal school settings.By embedding learning tools into a garden that’s already buzzing with family life, the Marie Wilkinson exhibit helps turn math into something that’s fun, approachable, and rooted in everyday curiosity. When to VisitThe Playful Learning area is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, no appointment or fee needed. Whether you’re dropping off donations at the food pantry, harvesting your garden plot, or just out for a stroll, it’s the perfect stop for an impromptu learning moment.Pair It with a Garden VisitWant to make a day of it? Families can explore the garden’s educational zones, take part in free cooking demos, or check out upcoming events like the Garden Harvest Dinner (August 9, 2025) all while encouraging kids to count peas and measure garden rows. You can even volunteer to help maintain the garden or support the learning stations!Learn more at: mariewilkinsonfoodpantry.orgOr follow the garden team at charityblooms.orgIn a city that continues to grow in heart and innovation, this new math exhibit is planting more than just knowledge, it’s nurturing confidence, curiosity, and connection. Next time you're in the neighborhood, stop by the garden and let your little ones lead the way. After all, math is everywhere and now, it's growing right here in Aurora.

Aurora’s Big Stage: A 4,000-Seat Theater to Transform Downtown or Trouble It?

Aurora’s Big Stage: A 4,000-Seat Theater to Transform Downtown or Trouble It?

Aurora, IL, already known for its rich architectural history and vibrant downtown revival, is now center stage in a growing debate: should the city greenlight a 4,000-seat performing arts theater a project pitched as a cultural and economic game-changer?The proposed venue, originally backed by the Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA), aims to bring in blockbuster Broadway shows, concerts, and large-scale touring productions. Its location? Just steps from the historic Paramount Theatre one of Aurora’s biggest artistic assets and a regional draw. But not everyone’s giving this a standing ovation.Supporters see the project as a bold cultural investment:Attract national touring shows that bypass Aurora due to venue size.Boost downtown foot traffic for restaurants, hotels, and retailers.Inject $100M+ in new economic activity, building on the $40M already generated by the Paramount. The theater, dubbed the City of Lights Centre, was slated to cost $125 million, with a phased funding strategy involving bonds, downtown redevelopment, and possible public-private partnerships. The ConcernsDespite the grand vision, public reaction has been mixed and, at times, fiery.1. Financial RiskAurora already subsidizes ACCA to the tune of millions per year. Critics warn a second venue could strain the city’s finances and push property tax burdens higher.2. Audience SaturationIs there enough demand for two major theaters within a few blocks of each other?3. Process TransparencySome residents questioned whether the community was adequately consulted before ACCA began pursuing bond funding and real estate options. In April 2025, John Laesch defeated longtime Mayor Richard Irvin in a major political upset. Shortly after, Laesch hinted the City of Lights Centre could be shelved indefinitely.“Pretty much dead,” Laesch reportedly said in a post-election interview, referring to the project. So is it over? Not officially. There’s been no public vote to kill the plan, and ACCA still holds several properties downtown some purchased with early-phase bond funds. That leaves a flicker of possibility... for now.As of mid‑2025, there’s no movement on construction. No new funding rounds. No official approval from city council. Whether the City of Lights Centre rises or fades into development limbo remains to be seen. This debate is about more than a theater. It’s about how Aurora defines its next chapter:Do we dream big and invest boldly? Or do we pause, prioritize, and listen closer to residents? Is the plan dead under the new mayor? We shall see.Lights up, Aurora. The curtain’s not down just yet.
