Hollywood Casino is turning up the heat on its upcoming Aurora and Joliet locations, transforming them into culinary hotspots with the launch of the Boulevard Food & Drink Hall. Thanks to a partnership between PENN Entertainment and Shawn McClain’s McClain Camarota Hospitality (MCH), guests can look forward to a mouthwatering lineup featuring Chicago chef icons alongside fresh fast-casual concepts .

Lucky Goat by Stephanie Izard

Celebrity chef and Top Chef alumna Stephanie Izard is bringing Lucky Goat, her first fast-casual burger venture, to Boulevard locations in both Aurora and Joliet. Expect gourmet burgers, chicken sandwiches, hand-cut fries, and indulgent milkshakes, all served in a fun, casual atmosphere.

Antique Taco

Rick Ortiz’s beloved Antique Taco will make its suburban debut in Aurora and Joliet. Known for its signature handmade tacos, crunchy taco salad, chips and guacamole, and specialty drinks, this opening extends the restaurant’s reach beyond its Chicago roots.

Pretty Cool Ice Cream

Dana Cree’s artisanal Pretty Cool Ice Cream will add its signature ice cream bars, popsicles, and cookie sandwiches to Boulevard. These will be the fourth and fifth locations, complementing the existing Logan Square and Lincoln Park outposts, even featuring a walk-up window in Lincoln Square.

Five50 Pizza + More

MCH introduces Five50 Pizza, a Neapolitan–New York hybrid pizza concept crafted by the same fine-dining team, adding a casual yet chef-driven twist to the food hall.

Additionally, Boulevard Joliet will offer a breakfast and bakery counter with locally roasted Big Shoulders Coffee, a mid‑century Hollywood-style bar serving local craft brews and cocktails, and seating for more than 100 guests with outdoor patio options.

Sorella & Sorellina by Giada

Hollywood Casino recently confirmed a partnership with celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis. Joliet will feature Sorellina by Giada, a bright, casual Italian eatery, while Aurora will host the more refined Sorella by Giada. Both promise high-quality Italian–California fusion fare.

What to Know: Timeline & Local Impact

  1. Hollywood Casino Joliet is slated to open on August 11, 2025, as part of the Rock Run Collection development near I‑55/I‑80
  2. Aurora’s land-based casino is aiming for a first-half 2026 debut, just west of Chicago Premium Outlets off I‑88
  3. Boulevard Joliet will input 600 employees, add to the existing team, and open up 450 construction and 615 permanent jobs
  4. The culinary additions are expected to make these casinos not just regional gaming destinations but buzzing centers for entertainment, tourism, and local dining culture .

This elevated dining concept, anchored by high-profile chefs and beloved local brands, is a win for community and culture. Guests will enjoy an all‑ages, destination-worthy food hall that’s accessible, casual, and curated with quality. From burgers and tacos to pizza, ice cream, and Italian classics, Boulevard is setting a high bar for suburban entertainment.

Aurora (2026) and Joliet (August 2025) are about to get a major boost, not just in gaming, but in culinary clout. With Boulevard Food Hall and Giada’s flagship restaurant, Hollywood Casino is redefining suburban Chicagoland dining, one chef-driven bite at a time.

$1.5 Million in State Funding Coming to Aurora Area—What Should We Prioritize Next?

$1.5 Million in State Funding Coming to Aurora Area—What Should We Prioritize Next?

Aurora, IL — Representative Barbara Hernandez has announced that $1.5 million in state funding is heading to organizations throughout the 50th District, thanks to the recently passed Illinois state budget. From nonprofits to museums, schools to solar panels—the funds will be distributed through the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley to support infrastructure repairs and improvements for 11 local institutions.Who’s Receiving the Funding? The Neighbor ProjectHesed HouseAurora Fire MuseumAurora Civic CenterRebuilding Together AuroraCity of BataviaMercy HousingJennings TerraceFox Valley Park DistrictAurora Public LibraryWest Aurora School District 129These funds are being used for a range of projects—like solar panels at Prisco Community Center, expanding access to Maker technology at the library, and preserving Aurora’s fire service history at the Fire Museum.Rep. Hernandez stated:“I will always prioritize making sure the community I represent receives its fair share of state funding… I’m proud to have helped secure support for organizations doing important work in our district.”And from the organizations themselves? There’s no shortage of gratitude. Whether it’s supporting working families through The Neighbor Project or improving accessibility at the Civic Center, these funds are aimed at helping both people and infrastructure. But Here’s Where We Turn It Over to YOU, Aurora:Are these the right types of projects to fund at the local level? What kinds of improvements or initiatives would YOU like to see prioritized next?Do you think this level of investment is enough—or should we push for more? This isn’t about left or right—it’s about local. How do we ensure state dollars make the biggest impact right here, where we live? But Is It a Win for Everyone? While many see this as a much-needed investment in local organizations, others in the community are asking tougher questions:What about youth support? With rising concerns around violence, mental health, and teen resources, some residents wonder if more direct funding should go toward after-school programs, mentorship, or community safety.Where’s the small business support?Local entrepreneurs continue to face challenges post-COVID. With none of the funds going directly to economic revitalization, some feel small businesses were left out of the conversation. Is infrastructure the best investment? Many of the projects focus on buildings—roofs, solar panels, physical upgrades. But some argue the real need is human-centered: counseling, outreach, education, and community organizing. Was there enough transparency?Did the public have a say in where this money went? Some feel the funding choices don’t reflect the most urgent needs on the ground. Is $1.5M spread too thin? With 11 organizations sharing the pot, is any single project getting enough to spark real, lasting change?Aurora is buzzing—and where the money goes next is up to us.

Mercy Medical Center: “A” Grade Amid Trauma Loss — What’s Really Happening in Aurora?

Mercy Medical Center: “A” Grade Amid Trauma Loss — What’s Really Happening in Aurora?

Aurora residents have had a lot to process over the past few weeks.First came the headline: Mercy Medical Center loses its Level II Trauma Center designation, due to multiple compliance issues identified by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).But then, a surprising twist—Mercy received an “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group, a nationally respected watchdog for hospital safety. So, what gives? How can a hospital lose trauma certification but still be ranked among the safest in the country? And what does it mean for us as a community?Let’s break it down. What Happened with the Trauma Center? On April 20, 2025, IDPH revoked Mercy’s Level II Trauma Center designation citing:Lack of dedicated trauma surgery coverageImproper use of bypass protocol due to trauma surgeon unavailabilityMultiple violations of the Illinois Emergency Medical Services Systems ActWhile this does not impact general ER services, EMS will now route trauma cases to other facilities like Rush Copley Medical Center. Rep. Barbara Hernandez RespondsRepresentative Barbara Hernandez (D-Aurora) issued a public statement acknowledging the concern:“I am in active communication with both IDPH and Prime Healthcare to find a solution that will allow compliance to be restored… It’s important that we rectify this situation in a timely manner and support both patients and hospital staff.”Her proactive approach suggests this issue is not being ignored, but rather being actively addressed behind the scenes—something many Aurora residents will appreciate as healthcare access remains a top concern.🟢 So… What’s This “A” Grade All About? That “A” comes from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national, peer-reviewed scoring system based on over 30 performance measures, including:Key Metrics That Earned Mercy an “A”:Low rates of infections (e.g. C. diff, MRSA)Effective hand hygiene and staff responsivenessSafe medication administrationStrong leadership on patient safetyThese measures don’t include trauma performance. Instead, they focus on how well the hospital prevents avoidable harm—things like:Surgical errorsHospital-acquired infectionsCommunication breakdowns between staff It’s entirely possible for a hospital to operate at a high level in general patient safety while simultaneously failing to meet the staffing requirements of a trauma center. What Does This Mean for Aurora? This complex picture raises several valid community questions:🟡 Is Barbara Hernandez’s intervention a step in the right direction?Yes—especially since her approach isn’t just reactive but also solution-oriented. Her coordination with IDPH and Prime Healthcare shows local advocacy is active and ongoing.🟡 Is an “A” grade fair despite the trauma revocation?Yes, based on the Leapfrog model. The “A” grade reflects everyday patient safety, not trauma capabilities. In many respects, Mercy is doing better than the headlines suggest.🟡 Is our hospital stronger than we thought in some areas?Absolutely. Mercy’s infection control and patient communication protocols are performing well above average. It’s easy to overlook these wins during controversy.🟡 Is the trauma revocation still a problem?Yes. Trauma readiness is about speed, specialization, and consistent availability. Losing that designation limits EMS options and places a greater burden on other area hospitals.🟡 Does the trauma volume decline reflect a safer Aurora?Possibly. If trauma admissions were decreasing, it could signal fewer violent incidents or accidents—a positive public safety trend. But the designation loss wasn’t based on volume—it was about readiness.🧭 What’s Next? The ER remains open for walk-ins. Don’t hesitate to seek care if you need it.EMS will reroute trauma patients to capable nearby hospitals.Residents should stay informed and engaged—this affects all of us.
