On June 27, 2025, the Aurora Public Library District was honored with the prestigious Liberty Bell Award by the Kane County Bar Association (KCBA) at their annual dinner, a proud and well‑deserved moment for our community’s cornerstone institution.

What’s the Liberty Bell Award?

The Liberty Bell Award celebrates non‑attorneys and community organizations that:

  1. Promote public understanding of the law
  2. Foster respect for courts and legal processes
  3. Encourage civic responsibility
  4. Support good governance

This national recognition is a testament to both legal literacy and civic empowerment.

Why Aurora Public Library Stood Out

🏛️ Legal Access Initiatives

  1. Lawyers in the Library: A monthly, walk‑in legal consultation program at Santori Library, staffed pro bono by two attorneys offering 15‑minute sessions—it’s confidential, free, and brings justice closer to home
  2. Court Access Library Centers: Aurora’s Santori branch serves as one of 18 pilot sites across Illinois, helping residents with court paperwork, Zoom hearings, and legal groundwork—especially for those without attorneys or limited means
  3. Expungement Clinics & Immigration Consultations: Hosted in partnership with local agencies, these programs provide vital support and access to legal resources

A Tradition of Recognition

The 2025 award follows a distinguished line of recipients:

  1. 2024: Linda Hagemann
  2. 2023: Lori Herte
  3. 2022: Nancylee Brown
  4. 2021: Jenny Maxwell

Aurora Public Library’s inclusion on this list further highlights its growing reputation as a civic champion.

What This Means for Aurora

  1. Boosts Civic Engagement: By demystifying the justice system, the library empowers residents to understand their rights and responsibilities and to participate more fully in civic life.
  2. Expanding Access: Services like legal clinics and court‑help programs reach community members who may otherwise have few legal support options.
  3. Role Model for Public Libraries: Aurora’s initiative shows how libraries can go beyond lending books they can actively champion access to justice, knowledge, and equity.

Join the Celebration!

If this award inspires you, here are a few ways you can get involved:

  1. Volunteer for Lawyers in the Library donate time or professional expertise
  2. Attend a Court Access Center session support outreach and access
  3. Spread the word! Whether on social media, at community events, or in casual conversation, let Aurora’s recognition inspire others

$1.5 Million in State Funding Coming to Aurora Area—What Should We Prioritize Next?

$1.5 Million in State Funding Coming to Aurora Area—What Should We Prioritize Next?

Aurora, IL — Representative Barbara Hernandez has announced that $1.5 million in state funding is heading to organizations throughout the 50th District, thanks to the recently passed Illinois state budget. From nonprofits to museums, schools to solar panels—the funds will be distributed through the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley to support infrastructure repairs and improvements for 11 local institutions.Who’s Receiving the Funding? The Neighbor ProjectHesed HouseAurora Fire MuseumAurora Civic CenterRebuilding Together AuroraCity of BataviaMercy HousingJennings TerraceFox Valley Park DistrictAurora Public LibraryWest Aurora School District 129These funds are being used for a range of projects—like solar panels at Prisco Community Center, expanding access to Maker technology at the library, and preserving Aurora’s fire service history at the Fire Museum.Rep. Hernandez stated:“I will always prioritize making sure the community I represent receives its fair share of state funding… I’m proud to have helped secure support for organizations doing important work in our district.”And from the organizations themselves? There’s no shortage of gratitude. Whether it’s supporting working families through The Neighbor Project or improving accessibility at the Civic Center, these funds are aimed at helping both people and infrastructure. But Here’s Where We Turn It Over to YOU, Aurora:Are these the right types of projects to fund at the local level? What kinds of improvements or initiatives would YOU like to see prioritized next?Do you think this level of investment is enough—or should we push for more? This isn’t about left or right—it’s about local. How do we ensure state dollars make the biggest impact right here, where we live? But Is It a Win for Everyone? While many see this as a much-needed investment in local organizations, others in the community are asking tougher questions:What about youth support? With rising concerns around violence, mental health, and teen resources, some residents wonder if more direct funding should go toward after-school programs, mentorship, or community safety.Where’s the small business support?Local entrepreneurs continue to face challenges post-COVID. With none of the funds going directly to economic revitalization, some feel small businesses were left out of the conversation. Is infrastructure the best investment? Many of the projects focus on buildings—roofs, solar panels, physical upgrades. But some argue the real need is human-centered: counseling, outreach, education, and community organizing. Was there enough transparency?Did the public have a say in where this money went? Some feel the funding choices don’t reflect the most urgent needs on the ground. Is $1.5M spread too thin? With 11 organizations sharing the pot, is any single project getting enough to spark real, lasting change?Aurora is buzzing—and where the money goes next is up to us.
